This painting uses a monochrome palette to think about identity, the painting is black and white but individuals rarely are.
A portrait in black and white of a young man addressing us frankly. He is undressed and relaxed, but his body language seems as though he has something to hide. What does he want to know, or say?
I really enjoyed the strong tone contrast in this painting and the opportunity to portray light on skin and hair. A Michelangelo-type vein on his arm was great fun, as was the hair lower down towards his wrists.
The dramatic light and unusual canvas size would make this a feature on your wall.
In my painting I aim to use dramatic light and I’m interested in the indication of form in the mind’s eye. In portraits especially I like to have a sense of narrative, capturing a moment of realisation or decision.
